Microsoft’s Xbox Game Camp Africa is back for its second year, happening on July 16th and July 17th 2024 in Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Casablanca.

The two-day event will be held online and will bring together various Xbox programs, celebrating Africa’s growing pool of game developers and helping them achieve their goals.

Participants must be adults living in Africa and either studying or working part- or full-time in fields like software development, visual arts, 3D, music and audio, web design, narrative design, or project management.

A region bursting with potential

Game Camp Africa will feature workshops on various game development topics, allowing young developers to learn from industry experts. Attendees can also pitch their game and business ideas to a panel for mentorship and advice and you can register from the official website until July 15th 2024.

Microsoft highlights that Africa has the youngest population globally and a lot of emerging talent that could boost the game development industry. Smartphone ownership is expected to hit 88% in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030, further supporting this growth.

The Africa Games Developer Survey shows that 63% of local developers have five years or less of experience, and only 19% have received outside investment, making it tough to build sustainable careers. Additionally, GeoPoll’s 2024 report found that 56% of local gamers don’t know games are developed in Africa.
