Former MMA fighter Gina Carano who played the fan favorite Cara Dune through the first two seasons of The Mandalorian has been fired by Lucasfilm following her controversial social media posts.
According to an official statement by Lucasfilm spokesperson, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Carano came under heavy fire on Wednesday after the hashtag #FireGinaCarano trended over an Instagram post comparing being Republican today to being Jewish during Nazi Germany.
She wrote, “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views.”
Lucasfilm’s decision to let go of Carano from The Mandalorian as well as any future spinoffs is hardly a surprise at this point. A considerable part of the fandom has been asking for this to happen over the last several months and those calls for Carano to lose her job only increased with each controversial post.
The news immediately ends Carano’s tenure with every Star Wars related show and likely Disney as a whole but it remains to be seen what becomes of the character of Cara Dune in The Mandalorian.
Lucasfilm’s statement didn’t touch on what the future holds, but she could be removed from the franchise altogether or recast with a different actress.
Cara Dune was widely expected to be included in the newly announced Rangers of The New Republic prior to Carano’s controversies. Now it’ll be up to Jon Favreau to determine what to do with Cara Dune. Whether the character sticks around or is replaced.
