A Sonic the Hedgehog 3D animated series, Sonic Prime, has been ordered at Netflix and is expected to premiere in 2022.
According to a statement the streaming giant released earlier today, the new series will be co-produced by Sonic creator SEGA of America, WildBrain Studios (Inspector Gadget) and Man of Action (Ben 10).
“Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own,” said Dominique Bazay, Director of Original Animation, Netflix. “I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix — one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.”
The 24-episode show will be animated in Vancouver and build on the recent momentum generated for the Sonic brand with the release of the Sonic movie in 2020 with the series arriving as Sonic celebrates his 30th anniversary in 2021.
Fans have long suspected that a new animated project might be in the works for the beloved speedster. This was partially confirmed back in December 2020 when the Netflix NX Twitter account accidentally announced a Sonic the Hedgehog project in a hastily deleted tweet.
Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s flagship franchise and remains extremely popular with fans. It is also one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, grossing over $5 billion by 2014 and selling 140 million by 2016. The video game series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.14 billion by 2021.
