After traveling faster than light on screen, it seems John Boyega now feels the need for a different kind of speed as he will be teaming up with Robert De Niro in a car racing action-thriller from Netflix titled The Formula.
Boyega is best known for his role as the ex-stormtrooper Finn in the most recent Star Wars trilogy. This time around, he will play a Formula One racing prodigy who is forced to become a getaway driver to save the only family he has left.
Boyega recently remarked on the constraints actors working on massive franchises face professionally and compared franchise commitments to being in a “luxury prison“.
Since wrapping up his Star Wars franchise commitments, he has been free to take on an eclectic mix of projects. He recently starred in one of the five installments of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology, Red, White and Blue and is currently filming They Cloned Tyrone opposite Jamie Foxx.
Gerard McMurray (The First Purge) returns to work with Netflix after the success of his last Netflix production, Burning Sands, which was nominated for the Grand Jury prize at the 2017 Sundance Festival.
Not much has been released about the movie but McMurray gave fans a brief plot outline in an Instagram post on Monday.
“It’s the story of a young man from Detroit who becomes an international racing star in the world of Formula 1 under the tutelage of his mentor with old mob ties.”
“Feels amazing to see this idea in my head finally come to life that I’m writing, directing, and producing,” McMurray wrote in his post. “My new production company Buppie Productions is teaming up with Tribeca Films and Netflix to bring to you a dope original film coming soon called The Formula starring two of my favorite actors, John Boyega and Robert De Niro.”
De Niro will produce The Formula alongside Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh who have an overall production deal with Netflix. No release date has been announced yet.
