Daredevil star Charlie Cox has reportedly wrapped filming on the as yet un-subtitled Spider-Man: 3. Cox played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Netflix series which was cancelled back in 2018 after three seasons.
Since it’s cancellation there’s been much fan interest and discussion about Cox possibly returning as the character. In every interview Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is characteristically coy about Daredevil’s possible future within the franchise.
As the multiverse is seemingly coming into play in the MCU through WandaVision, Spider-Man 3, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, opportunities abound for Cox’s Daredevil/Matt Murdock character to make an impactful appearance.
In a recent interview with Comicbook while promoting WandaVision, when asked to address the many rumors surrounding Spider-Man 3 and how the multiverse will come into play, Feige would only tease the future based on a known movie title.
“The biggest clue is the title of the second Doctor Strange movie. That’s the biggest clue of where the Multiverse of Madness is taking us and how we’re exploring that,” Feige said. “It’s surreal to me that we’re talking about a Spider-Man 3. I worked on a movie called ‘Spider-Man 3’ many years ago directed by Mr. Sam Raimi. So this, clearly, the shorthand of calling it ‘Spider-Man 3’ now, it’s fine. We call it ‘Homecoming 3.'”
Fans of Daredevil hoping for the character’s future return received some hope in December 2020, when it was first reported Cox would have a role in Spider-Man 3.
That film is poised to have a massive cast consisting of not just returning MCU veterans, but also stars from Sony’s other Spider-Man film franchises. Nothing official about Cox’s involvement was ever confirmed, but if the latest rumor is to be believed, it’s all true.
This news comes by way of Brandon Davis, the host of ComicBook’s new Marvel podcast Phase Zero who revealed that a reliable source – the same one that revealed to him that Owen Wilson had a role in the Loki series – told him that Charlie Cox not only has a role but has in fact has wrapped filming on the MCU’s Spider-Man 3.
Details are slim, so it’s unknown if he’s playing the same Daredevil from the Netflix series or a different version of the character as rumors point to Spider-Man 3 fully delving into the multiverse. This news also raises questions about the possible return of such fan favorite characters from the show as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin.
