Digital piracy has long been the bane of entertainment media and it only seems to be getting increasingly worse. When it comes to the most pirated media formats nothing beats the global demand for movies and TV shows— and the continuing dilemma of multiple streaming services is not helping matters.
2020 was a terrible year for show business. The Coronavirus pandemic put a massive strain on the movie and television industry, with productions being halted left and right. Movie release dates were delayed more times than Cyberpunk 2077.
TV shows were a whole other ballgame as streaming services and cable channels picked up the slack and filled the massive vacuum left by the absence of theatrical releases. In some sense, 2020 can be referred to as the year of TV shows.
Here’s the full list of the 10 most pirated TV shows of 2020 according to TorrentFreak.
10. The Flash.
The long-running CW superhero series dropped from the No. 7 spot it held in 2019.
The CW series based on the vigilante billionaire playboy (no, not Batman) released its eighth and final season in 2020. The CW behemoth climbed up one spot from its 2019 position.
8. The Outsider
This HBO mystery series starring Ben Mendelsohn and Jason Bateman is a newcomer to the list as it premiered its first season in 2020. The show is based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel of the same name.
7. The Walking Dead
The prominent AMC zombie series dropped one spot from its 2019 position.
6. Rick and Morty
The Adult Swim animated series climbed two spots after finishing at Number 8 in 2019.
5. Star Trek: Picard
This CBS All Access series is the second newcomer on the list. Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his role as the beloved star fleet commander, Jean-Luc Picard.
The History Channel epic dropped its sixth and final season on Amazon prime. Vikings moved up one spot from its 2019 position.
This HBO sci-fi series returns to the list after not taking any spot on the 2019’s top 10. The show finished eight in 2018, and despite not taking any spot on the top ten in 2019, its third season catapulted it to the third position in 2020.
2. The Boys
This subversive take on the superhero genre from Amazon Prime came in at second place. Like Westworld, it didn’t take any spot in the 2019 list, but its second season made it the top newcomer on 2020’s pirated list.
1. The Mandalorian
The critically acclaimed Disney+ series was the most pirated show of 2020, making it the first show to dethrone Game of Thrones since 2012. It climbed two spots from its no. 3 position on the 2019 list.
For many years Game of Thrones dominated this list, but since the hugely successful fantasy epic ended its run in 2019, it appears The Mandalorian is the show best poised to win the game of downloads.
Things are set to get more interesting with Disney+ planning to launch dozens of Star Wars and Marvel shows over the next few years. Let us know in the comments which shows you think will make the list next year.
