One of the lasting impacts of COVID-19 is that it forced movie studios to shift release dates for some of the most anticipated horror movies. Many of 2020’s postponed horror are now scheduled for release in 2021, while some are yet to announce release dates.
Not all our anticipated movies skipped 2020 – major blockbusters such as The Invisible Man and The Hunt went to VOD (Video On Demand), while others were indefinitely postponed in hopes of getting an eventual theatrical release.
With COVID-19 restrictions briefly lessened, Blumhouse Productions’ Freaky enjoyed a quick run at selected theaters in November 2020, and a VOD release came along two weeks later.
That being said, horror fans have several terrifying tales about to be delivered to their screens. Here are the horror movies for release in January, 2021.
1 – The Devil’s Light – January 8, 2021
The Devil’s Light is a paranormal and thrilling horror from Daniel Stamm. Stamm is also known for directing other thrillers like The Last Exorcism and 13 Sins. The Devil’s Light is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on January 8, 2021.
The movie tells the story of a young nun who must confront a demonic force that holds disturbing ties to her past while performing her first exorcism.
The film It stars Virginia Madsen who played Penelope Gardiner, the mother of Freya’s fiance Dash (Eric Winter) in Witches of East End, alongside Ben Cross in his final movie role after tragically passing away due to cancer in August, 2020 – the movie is dedicated to him.
2 – Hunted – January 14, 2021
Shudder is famous for releasing new horror titles weekly – specifically on Thursdays. They are adamant to continuing this long term tradition in 2021. Hunted premieres on the 14th of January, 2021.
The story follows a stressed-out supervisor for a construction company named Eve (Lucy Debay) as she tries to avoid being captured by two men in a dark forest infested with flesh seeking wolves and misogynistic horrors.
Hunted is an adaptation of the original Brothers Grimm “Little Red Riding Hood” fairytale and is one of the most anticipated releases of the month.
3 – Psycho Goreman – January 22, 2021
Another Shudder release, Psycho Goreman is set to air on January 22nd, a week after Hunted. The film is also a highly anticipated horror by Steven Kostanski, who is well known for his special effects contribution on blockbuster movies such as, IT: Chapter One, Silent Hill: Revelation, and Suicide Squad.
Kostanski wrote and directed Psycho Goreman. The film is about a monster who wants to put an end to the universe.
When two siblings named Luke and Mimi discover a way to take control of the beast, they choose to manipulate it into doing whatever they want. Sick!
4 – Wrong Turn – January 26, 2021
For one night only, on January 26, Mike P. Nelson’s highly anticipated reboot of the long-running Wrong Turn franchise will play in theaters!
The seventh movie in the series follows a team of friends hiking the Appalachian Trail, only to be hunted by the “Foundation”, a self-sufficient community of people who have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years and have become extremely hostile to outsiders.
Emma Dumont plays the role of Mila D’Angelo, while Matthew Modine plays the role of a dad who might not arrive in time to save the kids. Wrong Turn is probably the most interesting and horrifying horror you’ll see in January.
5 – The Night – January 29, 2021
After a night out with friends, an exhausted married couple, Babak (Shahab Hosseini), Neda (Niousha Noor) and their baby take shelter in the grand, but eerie Hotel Normandie.
Throughout a seemingly endless night, mysterious disturbances ruin their night’s rest as Babak and Neda soon realize they’re locked-in with a malevolent force that hungers for the dark secrets they’ve kept from one another.
Shabab Hosseini who played Emad in The Salesman is also playing the lead role on The Night as Babak.
It features a similar storyline to Stephen King’s iconic Novel, The Shining, because the plot pertains to couples whose relationship is being manipulated by a horror they cannot explain.
The Night will be released on VOD on January 29, 2021.
The pandemic could not delay the release of every Horror Movie in 2020, but it did deprive viewers from seeing some of the most anticipated releases such as, The Forever Purge, Escape Room 2, Halloween Kills, Candyman and my personal favorite, A Quiet Place 2.
Most of these horror blockbusters are expected to premiere in 2021, many are yet to get a specific release date. It’s relevant to note that a second wave of COVID-19 might once again cause a delay in release dates or deny the movies a theatrical release.
