In the teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, fans have been given a first look at Jake Gyllenhaal as the Spider-Man villain known as Mysterio. In the comics, Mysterio is a master of special effects who pretends to have magical powers and embarks on a life of crime.
Mysterio appears later in the trailer and from the looks of things, Gyllenhaal’s screen version of the character is going to be perceived by the public as one of the good guys. He appears in a signature cloud of green smoke dressed in a comic-book accurate caped costume and begins to battle a water-creature.
Mysterio has been the name of several super-villains in Marvel comics, but the most notable of these was also the very first version of the character. In The Amazing Spider-Man #13, the world is introduced to Quentin Beck, a special effects wizard and stunt man who realizes that his expertise in illusions made for a better super-villain than his frustrating dead-end career and failed attempts to become an actor.
During his fight, a closer look reveals Mysterio is unleashing blasts that contain green runes from his hands while flying through the air. This spectacular display of flight and magical power is in keeping with his comic-book counterpart’s skill at deceptively mimicking magical powers.
The fact that Mysterio’s powers appear to mimic the powers of Dr Strange when he uses the Eye of Agamotto maintains Marvel Studios’ in-universe consistency. It could also mean he has a surprising amount of insight into the world of Dr. Strange and could imply a connection. Perhaps he was a failed student of the mystic arts?
Gyllenhaal is also seen in public without Mysterio’s signature fish-bowl helmet – this almost never happens in the comics and may upset some comic-book purists the same way fans were upset when Stallone’s Judge Dredd was seen without his helmet for a lot of the 1995 movie.
Spider-Man: Far From Home will feature the return of Tom Holland as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Zendaya as “MJ,” (Mary Jane Watson?) and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. Jake Gyllenhaal joins the Sonyverse/MCU as Mysterio and Michael Keaton makes his return as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture. New cast members include comedian J.B. Smoove and Numan Acar (Aladdin) as Dimitri. The ever-present Samuel L. Jackson returns to the screen as Nick Fury.
The film is directed by Jon Watts and scripted by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers who wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit theaters on July 5, 2019.
