Who’s Gonna Rescue Tony Stark? Take Your Pick

Marvel finally deigned to give us rabid fans our first glimpse of Avengers 4 by way of a (teaser) trailer that reveled that that the official title would be Avengers: Endgame. In the trailer, we also get a glimpse of what happened to Tony Stark after he watched his young protege Peter Parker disintegrate in his arms. it’s not looking good.

“Part of the journey is the end… just for the record, being adrift in space with zero promise of rescue is more fun than it sounds. Food and water ran out four days ago. Oxygen will run out tomorrow morning. That’ll be it. When I drift off, I will dream about you. It’s always you.”

– Tony Stark

The trailer opens with Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) adrift in space leaving a recorded message for Pepper Potts. The device used for the recording is his battered and apparently unwearable Iron Man helmet, which raises questions of its own since Tony still has his chest unit container for the Bleeding Edge armor. It’s pretty clear that things are bleak.

There’s a brief moment where we see Nebula on a ship gazing (at someone?) off-camera and then a subsequent scene in which she is briefly resting her hand on someone’s shoulder. This is most likely Tony since the last time fans saw him, he was left alone on Titan with Nebula after they had just watched Star Lord, Spider-Man, Drax the Destroyer and Mantis turn to dust after the Thanos snap.

And while its not revealed what ship they are adrift on, it’s a pretty fair bet that its the same ship Nebula used to travel to Titan and join the fight against Thanos. The ship appears to be unable to fly and Tony states that in addition to food and water running out four days prior, oxygen will expire the following day.

This raises the question of how Iron Man gets back into the endgame as our favorite cosmic spacefarers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, are done and dusted – with the exception of Rocket Racoon. So let’s run down a list of possible options.

The Nova Corps

The Nova Corps are the intergalactic military and police force of the Nova Empire. They had been at war with the Kree empire until a peace treaty was signed prior to the events of Guardians of the Galaxy. Since they have been known to respond to distress signals, it would not be far-fetched for this space faring force to find and rescue Tony and Nebula on their ship.

However Thor revealed that Xandar, the Nova Corps home world, was decimated by Thanos to gain possession of the Power Stone, therefore their fighting and space traveling condition is unknown. In addition, they would have suffered the devastating effects of the Thanos snap so we can safely assume the Corps are too busy licking their wounds to be patrolling space.

Valkyrie, Korg and the Asgardian Survivors

Infinity War continued right where Thor: Ragnarok left off with one notable exception: no Korg, or Valkyrie. The lovable rock creature and the Asgardian alien were last seen on the Asgardian ship fleeing with Thor, Hulk, Loki and Heimdall. But while we saw the tragic deaths of Heimdall and Loki noone really knows what became of those other fan-favorites we met on Sakaar.

It is generally accepted that Valkyrie and Korg survived the attack by Thanos on the ship by fleeing with half of the surviving Asgardians so they could be out there in space. Maybe they just might come upon a drifting ship and give fans the Tony Stark/Korg or Nebula/Valkyrie buddy action comedy dynamic we never knew we needed.

Kraglin, The Ravagers or Some Other Space Travelers

Yes, we all know space is a big place. But then again a drifting spaceship is just the sort of thing that brings scavengers out of some random wormhole in search of scrap or a payday. And who else but the Ravagers would be the right fit for a random encounter in the midst of tragedy.

Tony Stark and Nebula could briefly run into Ravagers under the command of Stakar Ogord (Sylvester Stallone) better known as Starhawk in the comics, or Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum), Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Krugarr and Mainframe (Miley Cyrus). That’s not as far-fetched as you might think.

Remember Kraglin? He was last seen at Yondu’s funeral with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and was confirmed by James Gunn as still being around and up to some “important stuff”. Is it too far-fetched to think he could be searching for the Guardians and run into a drifting ship?

Captain Marvel

The most obvious choice for a space rescue of Tony and Nebula however is undoubtedly Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). With her connection to the alien Kree and her ability to travel through space (not to mention her need to respond to Nick Fury’s page), it is only natural to expect to see her in Avengers: Endgame.

Brie Larson has been prepping to make her MCU debut in 2019’s highly anticipated Captain Marvel movie but expectations are even higher for her to play a major role in the endgame thereby positioning her for a major role Marvel’s Phase Four.

That’s our list of possible ways Tony Stark and Nebula could be rescued in space. Think we missed anyone? Let us know in the comments.

Avengers: Endgame will be in theaters April 26, 2019.
