Sony’s Spider-Verse Webbing Up its Spider-Women for a Movie

The positive buzz generated by the upcoming Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse movie – which has already seen a sequel greenlit that will focus on Miles Morales’ journey. – may have set things rolling at Sony for an entry into the coming wave of female-led superhero fare.

Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures, after unsuccessfully trying to emulate the Marvel Cinematic Universe by creating an interconnected world for its Marvel-licensed Spiderman characters to play in, has decided to go in a new direction and profit off the “#metoo moment where Wonder Woman is being followed by a growing number of female superheroes”.

The report goes on to say that Sony has begun work on an animated film that will focus on not one, but three generations of women with spider powers. At a time when female superhero representation is belatedly growing, this is a welcome development.

Little is known about which spider-powered females will appear as characters but the breakout character Spider-Gwen is rumored to be first in line. Bek Smith (Wrath of the Titans) has been tapped to pen the script and Amy Pascal will return to produce with involvement from Avi Arad and Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie).
