BREAKING: ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Gets a Season 7 Renewal

Well… that was certainly unexpected!

ABC officially announced Friday that “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will be getting a seventh season. That the show, which is yet to air its abridged sixth season, is getting a seventh season comes as a huge surprise to followers of the show which was once rumored to be ending after season 5.

Despite recent news making the waves that the show was actually more popular than previously believed, this news does not mean its continued presence on the airwaves is totally assured. The next two seasons will apparently be filmed back-to-back to save on production costs a sign that the powers-that-be at ABC still prefer to hedge their bets.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez and Jeff Ward as Deke Shaw.

Notably, series star Clark Gregg is not listed among the cast in ABC’s press release about the renewal news. Gregg, who has played the likable Agent Phil Coulson since Iron Man and from the series launch, was last seen at the end of the Season 5 finale retiring to spend his remaining days in Tahiti. Although he will play a younger version of the character in 2019’s Captain Marvel, fans wonder if the story of the “Son of Coul” has come to an end.

The series was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.
