Entertainment Weekly has revealed a new look at Zachary Levi in the upcoming standalone Shazam! movie set to hit theaters next April. The image features a positively glowing Zachary Levi as the titular star apparently showing off his powers – or at least the power of the lightning bolt on his super suit – to a friend.
The image follows up on last week’s reveal of the first official Shazam! photo, which had the super-powered hero and his young buddy sucking on some soda.
In the film, Billy (whose younger version is played by Disney Channel star Asher Angel) is assigned to a new foster home where he befriends comic book superfan Freddy. One day, Billy’s subway ride is interrupted by a mysterious Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) who’s been searching for ages to find the right successor to inherit his powers. He reveals the teen’s been selected to gain an assortment of abilities, and all it takes is for Billy to say “SHAZAM!”
Shazam! is one more entry in the unofficial phase two of DCEU films that includes Aquaman which hits theaters Dec. 21. Aquaman’s first official teaser poster was released earlier and the lighter tone of the imagery from both movies clearly represents a continuing shift away from the darker themes embodied by previous Zack Snyder inspired movies.
Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand and Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana. Here’s the official synopsis:
“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”
Shazam! hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
